This past weekend I visited La Cabra Brewing in Berwyn, PA (642 Lancaster Avenue, Berwyn, PA, 19312). They are located directly across from the Berwyn SEPTA Train Station, so it’s easily accessible through public transportation. They also have a parking lot in the back.
There are two levels with a bar on each one. The upstairs bar is a bit more casual with a lounge area fitted with a sofa, a small stage, and plenty of seating. There are waiters on the lower level, but the food is ordered at the bar on the second level. I sat downstairs at the bar on a steamy Saturday night in July. To my surprise, there was plenty of seating available. The second level, the larger and open space, looked quite barren with less than 10 patrons.
They hopped on the New England IPA bandwagon with Betwixt and Between (below left), Tweezer (above), and Galaxy Shatter. Even their acclaimed Hipster Catnip (below right), though deemed an American IPA, is hazy and juicy in true NEIPA fashion. Their IPA’s are not overly hopped, which is great for people who don’t like beer to be bitter.
The food menu is Latin-inspired complete with tacos, empanadas, and guacamole, though they have burgers and sandwiches for the less adventurous patrons. The guacamole was fantastic. The chips are made of thick corn tortillas and are clearly homemade.
The pork empanadas were incredible. The dough was crispy, but the inside was moist and perfectly cooked. One order, two large empanadas, was $10. I’d consider getting two orders as a meal.
